APIA — Samoa’s inflation rate has been fluctuating in a narrow band around 4% through the first half of 2026, with the central bank holding its key interest rate steady at 6.5% since March, according to the Central Bank of Samoa. The data suggests policymakers are treading carefully as they balance price stability against a fragile economic recovery in the Pacific island nation.

Inflation Trends

Consumer prices in Samoa rose 4.4% in June 2026 compared with a year earlier, the Central Bank of Samoa reported. This marked a slight uptick from 4.5% in May, but remained within the 4% to 4.5% range seen all year. Inflation started 2026 at 4.2% in January, then edged up to 4.3% in February before dropping to 4.0% in March. It climbed again to 4.1% in April, hit a peak of 4.5% in May, and eased back to 4.4% in June.

The persistent inflation, driven largely by higher food and fuel costs, has outpaced the central bank’s comfort zone of 3% or less, putting pressure on household budgets in the capital, Apia, and across the islands.

Monetary Policy

The Central Bank of Samoa has kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 6.5% since its last adjustment in March 2026, according to the bank’s monetary policy statement. The rate, which influences borrowing costs for commercial banks and consumers, has not moved since the bank raised it from 6.0% in late 2025 to combat rising prices. By holding rates steady, the central bank aims to curb inflation without choking off economic activity, particularly in tourism and remittance-dependent sectors.

The bank has signaled it will monitor inflation data closely, with any further rate hikes dependent on whether price pressures persist or ease.

Economic Outlook

Looking ahead, Samoa’s economy faces a delicate balancing act. Inflation is expected to remain sticky above 4% for the rest of 2026, according to the International Monetary Fund’s latest regional outlook, as global commodity prices and supply chain disruptions continue to affect the island nation. The central bank’s tight policy stance is likely to remain in place, with analysts at the Asian Development Bank forecasting that any rate cut would be premature until inflation falls closer to the 3% target.

However, the cost of borrowing at 6.5% may weigh on private investment and consumption, especially in Apia’s small business sector. While remittances from Samoans abroad provide a buffer, the economy’s reliance on tourism and agriculture leaves it vulnerable to external shocks.
